Wick and the room

Wick is the point of the whole thing. Here is how the candle keeps time with you.

The bond

Every morning pays bond xp: 10 for getting up, 20 more for a finished routine. The strip on Home shows the level and a bar to the next one. Tapping it opens Wick's bond with the total xp, the number of mornings, a count per routine, and the flame colours. There is no streak on this screen, on purpose.

Levels get further apart as they go: level 2 needs 10 xp, level 5 needs 160, level 10 needs 810, and level 20, the last, needs 3610. Only mornings pay xp; Focus and the First steps pay dewdrops.

Flame colours

Flame colours unlock with the bond and show on Wick everywhere: the room, the wake screen, the widgets and the share card. Tap an unlocked swatch on the bond screen to wear it; a locked one tells you the level it needs.

Tapping Wick

A tap on Wick brings up one line from the narrator, for six seconds, never the same one twice in a row. What it says depends on the hour: morning, afternoon and evening lines while Wick is awake, sleepy lines in the ninety minutes before bedtime, and "Shh… Wick is fast asleep." with the next alarm time once the candle is out. Rain and snow have their own lines. VoiceOver reads the line aloud.

Some furniture answers a tap too: a lamp flickers, a plant sways.

The home screen with a narrator caption over the room: Wick bobs a little higher. Someone came by.

Time of day and weather

The room in the morning: bright sky in the window, pink wall The room in the evening: golden light and a lit lamp The room at night: dark blue tones, Wick asleep with the tuck-in caption
The same room at 9 in the morning, half past 7 in the evening, and 11 at night

The room follows the clock: the sky outside the window, the light on the walls, the lamp and Wick's glow. Rain, snow or clear skies are rolled once a day from the season and your region's hemisphere. It is not real weather; Dawnling never looks up your location or the forecast.

Wick's bedtime

Wick goes to bed at the time set under Settings → Bedtime → Reminder time (22:00 to begin with), whether or not the reminder itself is switched on, and sleeps for eight hours. Getting up with an alarm, or answering Yes on the morning check-in, wakes Wick early, because Wick wakes when you do. An unusual bedtime is taken literally: 15:00 means a nap from three in the afternoon until eleven at night.

The tuck-in

The first time you open the app after Wick's bedtime, a short scene plays: Wick nods off, and the narrator says "Wick is tucked in. See you at sunrise." Once a night, no more.

The bedtime reminder

Settings → Bedtime → Bedtime reminder sends one ordinary notification at the reminder time: "Wick says goodnight. See you at sunrise." and three variations. It is not Time Sensitive, so a Focus keeps it quiet, and it needs notification permission the first time you switch it on. Tapping it opens the tuck-in.

Greetings and the header

The header says Good morning from 5, Good afternoon from noon, Good evening from 5 in the afternoon and Good night from 10, with the date under it, the dewdrop balance, and the alarm list button.

Something grew overnight

One item in the collection grows instead of staying put: the Dawnling seedling, a thank-you for early testers that arrives by code. It counts the days on which you logged a morning since it arrived: a sprout after 3, a young plant after 6, in bloom after 10, and the room says "Something grew overnight" when it changes. Missed days never undo growth.
